Southern Education: Part 1

Grammar: Part 2

I’m afraid that I won’t get much time to update in the coming weeks while D & J are on their honeymoon (scuba diving in Honduras – lucky ducks!), so I thought this  would be a good time to dispense a little more wisdom in the form of southern  grammar and my favorite words and phrases.

Enjoy!

D
Dab – a small quantity

Dinner – lunch (a true southerner eats Supper in the evening)

E
Ever – always

Everwhichway – in all directions

F
Fairly – nearly, almost

Fair Piece – a long distance

Favor – to resemble

Fixin’ - preparing, as in “I’m fixin’s to go to the store”

Blah…

Oh, how I would rather be anywhere else right now.

It’s only Tuesday (and merely day 2 of 20+ days without Jess in the office) and I am already feeling tense, exhausted and physically ill. I’m crossing my finger that the flu-like symptoms are just a manifestation of the stress and exhaustion, and not an actual flu.

Fingers (and toes) crossed that if this is a flu it passes quickly enough that I can be fully recovered by Thursday when my family gets into town. I will be seriously bummed if I miss out on quality family time (a.k.a. eating out at new restaurants we would never try without a special excuse).

Keeping things positive – we are enjoying the final countdown to Doug & Jess’ big day. We started the week off (or ended the week, however you like to look at it) with Sunday brunch at Dante’s, which was exceptional – as always. I don’t think I will ever tire of their shrimp & grits. Last night was one last dinner with D & J before their week becomes total chaos. We opted for something completely new for all of us, and Herbsaint did not let us down. They make a mean Caiparihna and their duck gumbo is phenomenal. We also indulged in a few French 75′s @ Luke with my dear sister-in-law (Jenn) and her boyfriend (Seth) to celebrate their respective testing success (Jenn passed her insurance exam and Seth his MPRE).

*The above-mentioned outings may be to blame for my current unhealthy feelings.

**I should mention/warn that I have an unhealthy obsession with food… I love trying new places and new dishes.  I will refrain from recounting (and reviewing) each dish… for now. I cannot guarantee that I will always be able to exercise such restraint in the future. New Orleans is, afterall, a foodie’s heaven and provides  ample opportunities to gush about food.

Well, I’m off to bed in hopes of fending off this flu-bug.

Ciao!

April Fools!

Today is April Fools Day, and while I have not played any practical jokes myself, I did manage to execute a pretty rockin’ prank for the law firm.

You can check it out here and here.

Happy pranking!

Southern Education: Part 1

Grammar: Part 1

Some 9+ years ago I was in the midst of preparing college applications and selecting the colleges to which I would apply. I spent countless hours pouring over my copy of The Princeton Review’s The Best 311 Colleges (it is now The  Best 368 Colleges) trying to determine where I was best suited to spend the next 4 years of my life. I had a dozen schools, give or take a few, that were contenders.  University of Boston and Loyola Marymount were high on the list… proximity to a desirable city was my main prerequisite. I was not about to pack up and move to a rural campus where I believed weekend activities consisted solely of keg parties and cow-tipping expeditions. After-all one can only tip so many cows before it becomes old news.

No – a big city was a must.

Atlanta, and the entire South, were not on my list of acceptable locales. Sure it was a big city, but it was in the South and everybody knows that the South is backwards and culture-less and stupid.

And the accents! How could southerners stand to listen to themselves speak?! What an offense to my grammar-snob, 750 SAT Verbal scoring ears!

Due to a serendipitous turn of events Atlanta is precisely where I would end up. I moved south excited but hesitant and very concerned that I would end up with one of those dreadful southern accents. I used to tell people who inquired about my college plans that I would drop out of college and move home when the first hint of a southern accent snuck into my speech.

10 years later I look back and laugh.

I love southern accents accents and all of their trappings. Sure there is occassionally an accent so thick and accompanied by a speaker I find so offensive that I occasionally find myself turned off by it. Most of the time, though, I love them and I love the uniquely southern words and sayings. I can appreciate that sometimes you just can’t do a sentiment/emotion justice without making up or misusing a word. I can also appreciate that no other “dialect” allows you to call some one out for being offensive/mean/straight out ass-holish while still sounding calm, cool, collected and best of all, sweet.

Anyway, with the increasing homogenization of society, and language, I figured this blog is the perfect place to dispense a little wisdom in the form of southern grammar (and my favorite southern adages).

A
Ain’t – contraction of am not

Ain’t got buthave only, as in “I ain’t got but a dime”

All tore up about it – very emotionally upset, extremely disturbed

Ass-busters – slippers; because a good southern floor is highly polished

B
Bad as I hate to do it – As much as I hate to do it

Bless Patsy – pleasant expletive expressing surprise

Bless your heart – f*** you, the speaker may add an adjective for extra emphasis, “Bless your little heart!”

Busy as a one-armed paper hanger – very busy

C
Can see to can’t see - dawn to dusk

Cotton pickin – loathesome, wretched

Country mile – a long distance

More favorites to come!

April Showers

Bring May flowers… but only with lots and lots of work.

We are gearing up for a big, exciting and exhausting April. This weekend will be sent working and getting all of our ducks in a row before Doug, Scott’s business partner in the law firm, and Jess, our Pubic Relations guru, get hitched here in The Big Easy. Very exciting.

Not so exciting? The 3 weeks we will be without Doug & Jess while they take their well-deserved honeymoon. I will be spending 3 frantic weeks in overdrive – manning the phones, arranging courier service, tracking service, scheduling appointments, tracking tasks, keeping up with design projects, keeping things organized, updating Wolfe Law Rocks and keeping Scott and Oscar healthy so that they can keep up. Scott will be spending that time lawyering for both him and Doug. I’m exhausted just thinking about it.

On the bright side:
1) My parents and sister will be coming down to celebrate Doug & Jess’s big day and sticking around for Easter and a few days of New Orleans style relaxation (a.k.a. pigging out and soaking in the local culture).

2) We will be squeezing in a trip to Seattle in the midst of all the chaos – a quick jaunt to work from the Seattle office for a few days and to close on our condo (finally!). I’m reaching my New Orleans quota and am starting to really crave a few days in the Pacific Northwest.

3) I fully intend on rewarding myself with a weekend spent laying by a pool (or beach) with a drink in hand for a few days of relaxation/recuperation, and perhaps some retail therapy

Wish us luck – and don’t get offended/worried if we’re a little slow to return your calls/emails over the next few weeks.

6 Months… and Pro Photos

March 13th marked 1/2 year of wedded bliss and. . . the long anticipated arrival of our professional wedding photos! Art & Shawna (of Art Pinney Photography) did an amazing job. Their photos are absolutely sublime.

Below are some candid shots from the reception. Enjoy!

Greetings & Salutations!

Welcome to my little corner of the “internets.”

I’m finally jumping on the blog bandwagon (slowly but surely Scott has made a tech-junkie out of me).

Given all of our bouncing back and forth between Seattle and New Orleans (and all points in between), Scott’s jam-packed work schedule, my aversion to the telephone, and my recent inability to write an email of more than 5 lines, I figured that this would be the best way to keep everyone caught up our daily lives, and maybe, just maybe, to improve upon my keeping-in-touch skills (or lack thereof).

So, welcome!
